Your Shopping Guide for Amsterdam
Hello and welcome to our new blog!
Do you like to do a bit of shopping while you’re on holiday and check out the shops in your holiday destination? If so, then you’ve come to the right place, because we’ll tell you about the best places to go shopping in Amsterdam.
Let’s start right away with the first and most famous two streets, located in the middle of the city centre, at the famous Dam Square: Kalverstraat and Nieuwendijk. The streets are directly opposite of each other, separated only by Dam Square and the palace located there. You will find the most diverse, but of course also the most famous shops in both streets, such as H&M, Zara, Pull&Bear, Mango, Stradivarius, Snipes, JD, Urban Outfitters, Rituals, Lego, Bershka, Hunkemöller, Only, Jack & Jones, Primark and many more. Not only Amsterdam locals go there to shop, but also most tourists, due to the central location of the two streets. Therefore, be prepared that Kalverstraat and Nieuwendijk can be very crowded. Most shops here close at 7pm, and on Thursdays and Fridays you even have 1-2 hours longer to do your shopping.
Let’s move on to the next shopping spot: De Bijenkorf. This luxury department store is also located at Dam Square. If you walk down the Damrak from Amsterdam Centraal station, you will soon be able to see the large department store. Equipped with the most exclusive brands, at de Bijenkorf you will find, for example, clothes by Calvin Klein, Stone Island, Gucci, Prada, Louis Vuitton, Levi’s or Scotch & Soda; accessories by Swatch, Pandora, Tiffany & Co. or Cartier; shoes by Balenciaga, Alexander McQueen, Michael Kors or Dune London; and make-up, perfume and cosmetics by Charlotte Tilbury, Dior, Laura Mercier, Aesop or Barberians Copenhagen. Of course, on the upper floors there are also all sorts of things for your home, from cutlery to bed linen, as well as clothes, accessories and school supplies for your child.
Opening hours are Monday and Sunday 11:00-20:00 and Tuesday to Saturday 10:00-21:00.
Next, we recommend the “Spuistraat”, which connects the city centre with the famous “Leidseplein”. Here you will find famous brands, as well as smaller boutiques, such as Abercrombie & Fitch, Brandy Melville, Suite Benedict, Manfield, Adidas, Lush or Boss. The opening hours of most of the shops here are from 10:00 to 18:00. However, on Thursdays from 10:00 to 21:00 and on Sundays only from 12:00 to 18:00. But this shopping place is especially recommendable because the street “Spuistraat” is beautiful and when you walk along this street, you will even cross the three main canals of Amsterdam (Prinsengracht, Keizersgracht and Herengracht).
Last but not least, we advise you to check out all the cute little vintage shops, second-hand shops and kilo stores. You’ll find some on the edge of the Red light district (Nieuwe Hoogstraat), in Kinkerstraat, in Amsterdam-Noord, in the de Pijp neighbourhood and the 9 Streets. In the 9 Streets district, there are not only vintage shops, but also exclusive and unique small boutiques that are definitely worth visiting. In addition, here and in the neighbouring Jordaan district there are some delicious cafés and restaurants where you can take a break from all the shopping.
Of course, there are other hidden shops in every corner of Amsterdam that you should definitely discover. Dare to go out of the city centre and into other neighbourhoods of the charming capital of the Netherlands. It’s definitely worth it!
Other cities in the Netherlands (some of which are not far from Amsterdam) also offer great shopping opportunities. Go to Haarlem, for example – there is even an outlet centre near this city – or to Utrecht, where you will find the large mall called “Hoog Catharijne”. Of course, the other big cities like The Hague or Rotterdam are also ideal for shopping.
We hope you enjoy discovering all these places and shops, as well as spending your money! We hope you find everything you need and also discover new, great shops.
