Zaanse Schans
You are visiting Amsterdam during the lockdown and you have already done all the activities from our previous blog, then how about a trip to Amsterdam’s closer surroundings? We recommend a visit of the Zaanse Schans near Zaandam, which is close to Amsterdam.
In the Zaanse Schans you will find everything that comes to mind when you think of the Netherlands: windmills, cheese, clogs, canals and tulips.
But what do you have to do to get there? It’s simple! Just take the bus or the train. By public transport you can reach the beautiful place within 20 minutes. From Zaandijk station it’s only a short 15-minute walk to the Zaanse Schans. And the best thing is that you can already see the windmills on the way.
Especially if the weather is good, it’s nice to visit this place, because the whole area is very beautifully designed and you can take some nice photos there! You can easily spend a few hours there and it is suitable for the whole family. We would even say that it is a good opportunity to go there during covid-times, as it’s not very crowded right now. The perfect time to visit is around lunchtime, as experience shows that the grounds tend to fill up in the afternoon.
To learn more about this beautiful place, you can download the Zaanse Schans app. In the app you can download several audio tours, so you can turn your mobile phone into your private tour guide to learn more about the history of the area.
Our tip: have a picnic on one of the many benches with a view! You can buy snacks and drinks in one of the small shops or directly in the windmills.
You have no idea what to pack in your picnic basket? Maybe our Food Tour through the Nine Streets of Amsterdam will give you some new ideas?
