Artis

Artis is the oldest zoo in the Netherlands and is located in Amsterdam. Artis is short for Natura Artis Magistra, which in Latin means “Nature is the teacher of art and science”. As stated above, this Amsterdam attraction is boasting a total of 27 different buildings that help to house over 900 different species. Within Artis Royal Zoo, you will get the chance to not only get up close and personal with some of the most beautiful animal creatures but also a ton of gorgeous flora as well.

In addition to the extremely impressive flora and fauna, Artis also has a rather large art collection, which is displayed in the Aquarium building of the zoo. Another aspect that sets this specific establishment apart is its beautiful and extensive library with over 20,000 books, 80,000 animal prints, and 3,000 manuscripts. With so much to offer the general public of both locals and tourists, Artis has been an incredibly unique cultural heritage since the 19th century.

So, wander around the grounds and make your way to the crocodiles, elephants, and monkeys before checking out the marine life at the Aquarium and paying a visit to the Planetarium. To end the day, spend some time in the Botanical Gardens to learn more about exotic species in the plant kingdom.
