The Old Church Amsterdam is the oldest existing building and is located on the Oudekerksplein in the city center of Amsterdam. The Old Church was found in ca. 1213 but was not consecrated until the year 1306 by the bishop of Utrecht with its patron saint, Saint Nicholas. After the Reformation in the year 1578, the church became a Calvinist church and is now over 800 years old, making it not only the oldest parish church but the oldest building in all of Amsterdam.<\/p>\n

It is located in the red light Amsterdam area, also called \u201cThe Wallen\u201d, which is now Amsterdam\u2019s infamous Red Light District and belongs to the top 100 of the Dutch National Monuments. The structure was originally built as a wooden chapel but later was replaced by a stone church. The church has since experienced a large number of renovations that have all been performed mostly by 15 generations of Amsterdam citizens.<\/p>\n

The structure covers an area of about 3,300 square meters (36,000 square feet) and due to the artificial mount foundation, the church has been securely settled on the land for so long. Another interesting fact about this church is the largest medieval vault in all of Europe.<\/p>\n

There is plenty to see and admire while paying a visit here. For example, the entire floor is made up of gravestones where local citizens have been buried on site, making it a total of 2500 graves.
