There are almost 881,000 bicycles for\u00a0840,000 inhabitants – crazy, isn’t it? However, you won’t only find them in the streets, many of them are also in the canals. If you’re lucky, you may see one of the city’s boats equipped with a large crane on deck to remove the bikes from the canals. But who wonders? 63% of Amsterdammers use their bicycles every day, so it can happen that they fall into a canal, right?<\/p>\n Speaking of canals, Amsterdam has a lot of them, 165 to be exact, and is therefore called “the Venice of the North” also because of its large number of bridges, well the weather is unfortunately not as nice as in Italy. In the past, living on a boat was rather a sign of poverty. Nowadays, it is rather hip to be one of the 5,500 inhabitants of a houseboat. But there are also other uses for the floating premises. In addition to restaurants, holiday accommodations and inhabited boats, there is also a houseboat for stray cats.<\/p>\n There is even a floating version of a flower market, the Bloemenmarkt in Amsterdam’s city centre.
