Piazza Dam è una piazza sempre affollatissima, situata a soli 5 minuti a piedi dalla Stazione Centrale di Amsterdam, ma comunemente chiamata semplicemente “Dam”, il cui nome risale addirittura al 1270. Fu costruita come una vera e propria diga che costituì il primo collegamento tra gli insediamenti situati sulle rive del fiume Amstel. Con il progressivo sviluppo edilizio, finì per diventare così ampia da essere definita piazza cittadina, ed è proprio così che la città che la circonda ha potuto svilupparsi così bene.

Today, Dam Square serves as one of the most popular places to go wandering about, eat, explore and shop around. The dam is also the starting point of several walking tours in the city as well. There are several museums and well-noted attractions within Dam Square that help to lure tourists in during their visit to Amsterdam. Without doubt, of all the attractions in Dam Square, Royal Palace of Amsterdam is quite literally the jewel in the crown. Dam Square is now considered as “the national” square that not only the people of Amsterdam recognize but also people throughout the entire Netherlands do as well.

Sul lato sud di Piazza Dam si erge la controversa statua commemorativa nazionale, dalle forme falliche, eretta in memoria dei soldati olandesi e dei membri della resistenza caduti durante la Seconda guerra mondiale.

There are frequently events being held in the square. Two of the most popular events of the year are the National Remembrance Day on May 4th, when the Dutch commemorate the victims of World War II as well as the funfair that occurs several times of the year, including King’s Day.
