Der Dam-Platz ist ein belebter Platz, der nur 5 Gehminuten vom Amsterdamer Hauptbahnhof entfernt liegt, aber er wird eher als „Der Dam“ bezeichnet. Die Geschichte um diesen Platz geht bis ins Jahr 1270 zurück. Er wurde ursprünglich als Damm errichtet, der die erste Verbindung zwischen den Siedlungen an den Ufern der Amstel herstellte. Durch die kontinuierliche Bebauung wurde er schließlich so groß, dass man ihn als Stadtplatz bezeichnete, wodurch sich die Stadt um ihn herum so gut entwickeln konnte.

Today, Dam Square serves as one of the most popular places to go wandering about, eat, explore and shop around. The dam is also the starting point of several walking tours in the city as well. There are several museums and well-noted attractions within Dam Square that help to lure tourists in during their visit to Amsterdam. Without doubt, of all the attractions in Dam Square, Royal Palace of Amsterdam is quite literally the jewel in the crown. Dam Square is now considered as “the national” square that not only the people of Amsterdam recognize but also people throughout the entire Netherlands do as well.

Auf der Südseite des Dam-Platzes steht die umstrittene, phallisch anmutende Nationaldenkmal-Statue, die zum Gedenken an die im Zweiten Weltkrieg gefallenen niederländischen Soldaten und Mitglieder der Widerstandsbewegung errichtet wurde.

There are frequently events being held in the square. Two of the most popular events of the year are the National Remembrance Day on May 4th, when the Dutch commemorate the victims of World War II as well as the funfair that occurs several times of the year, including King’s Day.

Weitere Sehenswürdigkeiten rund um den Dam-Platz sind das Amsterdam Museum, die Neue Kirche und die Beurs van Berlage, ein ehemaliges Börsengebäude, das heute als Konzertsaal und Ausstellungsraum genutzt wird (hinter dem Kaufhaus „Bijenkorf“ gelegen).
