Amsterdam Centraal Station
Amsterdam Centraal Station
Centraal Station Amsterdam is the largest railway station in Amsterdam as well as a major national railway hub. Centraal Station Amsterdam is the second busiest station in the country along with the most visited national heritage site of the Netherlands. As mentioned before, over 260,000 per day use this station and chances are that if you are heading to Amsterdam and use public transportation, you will be one of them.
Designed by Dutch architect Pierre Cuypers, it was first opened in the year 1889 and features a Gothic/Renaissance Revival station building along with a cast iron platform roof that spans over approximately 40 meters. Over the years, major construction and renovation work have been underway in order to accommodate the North-South Line route, which is now scheduled to open in the year 2017.
Amsterdam Centraal Station is not only a place that serves as a major transportation hub, it also is a place filled with a long and rich history, unique designs and an internationally recognized structure.
